Evanescence Return to the Stage at “Secret” New York Gig

By Chris Harris
Source: Rollingstone

It was a chant that hadn’t been heard in Manhattan in more than two years, and it started a little after 9 p.m., as the anxious crowd who packed out the Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom started growing more and more impatient: “EVAN-ES-SCENTS, EVAN-ES-SCENTS.” And though the last time Amy Lee floated across a stage George W. Bush was in office, you wouldn’t have been able to tell from the band’s adept, hard-charging performance.

But as the Evanescence frontwoman explained to the audience at last night’s extremely intimate secret concert, the one-off performance was quite necessary. After all, on November 8th, Evanescence will be performing before 40,000 screaming fans at the Maquinaria Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the band needed a little limbering up before heading south. “Thanks for being our guinea pigs,” Lee joked to the mostly female crowd.

With Evanescence hard at work on the follow-up to 2006’s The Open Door, it’ll be another year before they’re back in New York, making last night’s concert a one-of-a-kind experience for the band’s rabid fans, who sold out the show in five minutes.

Lee, looking rested and donning bulky black boots and a multi-colored dress that looked like it was stolen from the Project Runway work room, commanded the stage, stretching her operatic pipes and stomping across the stage like a pixie on speed during the set’s opener, “Going Under,” her voice as crisp and smoky as ever. The band, featuring fill-in guitarist James Black from Finger Eleven, sounded tight, and ripped through cuts like “The Only One” and “Missing” for the mesmerized audience, who hoisted smart phones and Flip cams in the air, recording every minute.

After “Haunted,” the band pummeled the crowd through “Lithium,” with Lee swaying and bouncing around the stage, pumping her fists in the air. The anguish in Lee’s voice was palpable, and the band skillfully replicated live what they do on tape. Next came “Good Enough,” with Lee stroking the ivories and delivering her lyrics with an elegant sweetness reminiscent of Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan.

After “Whisper,” Lee and the band launched into the anthemic “Call Me When You’re Sober,” which had everyone in the place headbanging along with Lee, whose hair whipped in circles wildly as she belted out the chorus. As the song ended, a fan tossed up a teddy bear that was intended for Lee, but ended up in the grip of a stage hand.

The audience sang every lyric back at Lee during “Bring Me to Life,” which was followed by “All That I’m Living For” and Taking Over Me.” Then came “Lacrymosa” with Lee going solo for “My Immortal,” a song that’s become something of an Alanis Morissette-like battle hymn for her Goth disciples over the last few years. Before leaving the stage, Lee thanked her fans for being so supportive for so long, and promised new material was on the way.

Happy Birthday “The Open Door!”

Three years ago today, The Open Door was unleashed upon the world. It debuted with 775,000 copies worldwide after having leaked over a month before it’s release. Even though it didn’t match the sales of “Fallen,” never had an album impacted me as much it did.

If you have time, post a comment mentioning how The Open Door has impacted you.

Exclusive Photos I Previously Mentioned
- They leaked before I posted them. I guess that’s what I get for waiting! They can be found here.

- Follow Amy-Fan.Org on Twitter here!
- Amy Lee finally got Twitter as well, you can follow her here! (WEEE!)

New Compilation
- Amy is doing a song on the new “Muppets Revisited” cover album featuring other artists such as The Fray and Weezer. More information to come!

If You Are Going To…

Sao Paulo Date / Performance Confirmed!

I waited before posting this to be absolutely certain that Evanescence would take the stage in Sao Paulo on November 11th. Amy herself has confirmed their appearance at the festival by posting an update on Evthreads. She also stated that this would not be the surprise she was talking about and we would get something to “hear.”

Hey guys,
I know you figured it out already but I just wanted to say we are indeed headlining one of the three nights at the festival in Sao Paulo in November! We’ve had a few cool opportunities to play one-offs over the past year or so, and I usually end up saying no because I’ve been so focused on the new material and I don’t want to get sidetracked (organizing an Ev show takes some pretty serious time and preparation). BUT the writing has been going so well lately, and you Brazil fans are some of our best and craziest, we decided to just go for it! We wont be playing new material, its going to be a collection of songs you already know (new stuff will come in due time ). I also wanted you to know that this is not the suprise I was referring to- that is still coming, and it WILL be a little something new to hear. ….. I really love these little smily guys. And what the hell is this one ? It looks like a ghost that swallowed a hanger. ANYWAY, I’m really excited and a little nervous about the show- I’ve been my anonymous alter-ego for a long time! Mostly I can’t wait to feel that feeling again- completely swallowed by the music. I love you guys and I can’t wait to see you Brazil! We’re gonna have a good time.
love,
Amy

Anyone else excited? I almost had a heart attack. I cannot WAIT!

Legends & Lyrics Update; It’s Not Looking Good

A very nice member on EvThreads (Tylertonsils) contacted the company producing the “Legends & Lyrics” show to ask when us fans would be able to see the show. Below is his post on EvThreads containing his question and response.

Tylertonsils: “Season two? When does that start? I am absolutely DYING for the Amy Lee show and having zero news is killing me! All I keep hearing is “look for season 2 in the fall” but that is wayy too vague!”

————————————————————————————

Legends & Lyrics: “January 2010, is the predicted date for Season 2. Please stay tuned and look for updates!”

This makes me so angry but maybe it really isn’t ready to be shown. I will die of anticipation by early 2010 because I’m in desperate need of some new material. I don’t believe that we will even get to see it until Febuary / March. Hope for the best and say an extra prayer that it comes out before then!

Top 20 Acts of the 2000s; Evanescence ranks #18!

I found this cool tidbit of information while browsing Google news. Apparently Evanescence ranked #18 in an article that listed the “Top 20 Acts of the 2000s.” I’m very proud of them and wish them continued success for the next (and hopefully coming out soon) record.

#18 – Evanescence, 9,965,000. The rock group won a Grammy as Best New Artist of 2003. Evanescence’s 2003 debut album, Fallen, is its best-seller, with sales of 7,269,000 copies. The album spawned two top 10 hits, “Bring Me To Life” and “My Immortal.” Top 200 rank: #186.

David Hodges Releases New EP!

David Hodges has released his first solo EP on Warner Bros. Records called “The Rising.” This EP showcases David’s talent and his growth as an artist over the years as he transitions from behind the scenes to the spotlight.

This EP is a must for Evanescence fans and/or people looking to spruce up their MP3 players. I got my copy from iTunes and I must say that this is simply amazing! I’ve had it on repeat for two days straight.

You can support David by purchasing his album from iTunes, Amazon, Wal-Mart, Zune Marketplace, or Rhapsody now!

PS: If you know anywhere else the EP can be purchase, please leave the link in the comments and I will add it up with the other five.

Evthread’s Update from Amy!

Amy gave us a little 411 of what going on with writing, life, and her latest musical obsessions. She actually revealed that there was a tiny surprise is in store later on. I’m on “cloud nine,” get it? CLOUD NINE? Enough with the lame jokes ha.

FYI, Will Hunt (not the one from Evanescence) produced Sally’s Song that was featured on Nightmare Revisited (where you can purchase on iTunes now); if this is a new song, I know it’s going to rock.

Hey everybody! Just checkin in.
There’s been a lot of writing going on this summer and I’m starting to get really excited. My good friend Will happens to also be a great producer, writer and programmer (lucky for me!) and we’ve been slaving away at some pretty interesting stuff lately… I’m not giving anything away just yet. Terry and I have been working together this week at my place just like old times and life is pretty good. I have a little surprise for you that I can’t spill just yet, but its coming soon and I can’t wait. I will let you know as soon as I’m allowed to!
Talk to you soon!

love,
Amy

p.s. My favorite music right now: CSS, Depeche Mode (sounds of the universe)(’in chains’ especially), MGMT, MIA. -Wow. I just realized thats a lot of initials…

p.s.s. David Hodges first solo ep comes out tomorrow! Congrats
